Sanctuary: “A sacred place, a place of refuge or asylum, a reserved area in which birds and other animals, especially wild animals, are protected.”
Sanctuary Camp is designed to meet all of these definitions: to provide a place of refuge for a family faced with serious illness, in an environment filled with natural beauty and protected wildlife.
Families will be housed in the Steamboat Springs area in rustic cabins. Many families will prefer the downtime, relaxing in their cabins or going for short walks and observing wildlife. Fishing, hiking, biking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing will be provided. Other activities available in the Steamboat area include snowmobiling, downhill skiing, ice skating, horseback riding, river tubing, hot air balloon rides, the Alpine Super Slide, Strings in the Mountains concert series, shopping, dining out and movies.
Sandy Buckle Animal Sanctuary
A special section of Sanctuary Camp is The Sandy Buckle Animal Center, created in memory of Sandra Fogleman Buckle. Our cherished friend in her battle with cancer was a shining example of courage, grace and generosity. Sandy and her beloved Bernese Mountain Dog, Emily, participated in Pet Therapy programs in Oregon and Idaho, bringing comfort to countless hospitalized patients.
Dave McIrvin is a retired pediatric cardiologist from Portland, Oregon. Linda McIrvin is a retired pediatric intensive care and emergency room nurse. We have re-located to Steamboat Springs, Colorado and are now devoting our time and efforts to starting up Sanctuary Camp. At present we are inviting families to come spend time in Steamboat in existing lodging. Sanctuary Camp is a secular, non-profit organization in Good Standing in the State of Colorado.
